Description

This is a reading lesson whose intention is to provide Ss with opportunities to develop reading skills and to interact with an authentic text related to travel and new experiences. By the end of the lesson, students will have had practice in reading a letter for gist and detail in the context of a new experience in Mongolia.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide reading practice for gist and specific information in the context of Mongolia.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of lexis and fluency speaking.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask my Ss to discuss the following 2 question: -Show slide with pictures of Mongolia. What do you know about this country? -Move to second slide and share two more pictures. How about their meals and climate? I am going to have an open-class discussion in order to listen to my Ss opinions. For the first question, I will have an empty slide where I will jot down any ideas from participating Ss. With regards to the second question, I will share two more images and allow them to express their thoughts.

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will ask Ss to read the following sentences and answer the questions that follow them: 1. Some people like to have lumps of fat in their meat. CCQ: a. What is this? b. What other meets have lumps? 2. The house was able to withstand the hurricane. CCQ: a. Did the house fall down? b. Was the house built strong? 3. The highlight of my vacation was going to six flags. Chapultepec park was ok but I didn’t have as much fun. CCQ: a. Did I enjoy going to six flags? b. Was the best part of my vacation six flags? 4. The jockey and the horse that won the race were number 2. CCQ: a. Who was the jockey? b. Is it a profession? FORM I will elicit FORM from the Ss. PRONUNCIATION 1. I will model the words. 2. I will ask the Ss to identify where the stress is. 3. I will ask my students to drill.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will ask Ss to read the text quickly and answer how the writer felt about his trip to Mongolia. After that, I will instruct them to work individually. To review, I will share a slide where they can see example answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I will ask the Ss to read the multiple choice questions on Microsoft forms for one minute. Then, I will do the first question with the group in order to model how the activity will be done. They will read the text once more and answer them individually. I will instruct them that they will have 5 minutes to answer all 10 questions. Once they have finished, I will send them to BORs and have them share their answers within their groups. I will ask Ss to justify their answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned.

I will ask Ss to discuss the following question: Have you ever been to a totally new place? I am going to send them to BORs to discuss the question within their groups. Then we will have an open-class discussion where they are going to share what they talked about.
