Description

In this lesson students focus on regular verbs in the past simple tense in affirmative, negative and interrogative forms and practise reading skills at the pre-activity stage and speaking skills at the post-activity stage by using the target language.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To enable students to extend their understanding and use of '-ed' in the past simple tense by clarifying affirmative, negative, and interrogative forms in the context of a reading text,Travel Essential, about travelling.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students to develop their reading skills in the context of a text about travelling.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show the pictures on w/b. In pairs: Ss discuss the pictures and ask each other: 'What is number 3?' 'It's a mobile phone.' Elicit the answers from the students. Show the answers on w/b

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss look the airport picture on w/b. Ask them the following questions: - Where are the Thompsons now? - Where are they going? - What can you see in the picture? Personalisation: What do you do before you go on holiday? Possible answers: pack a bag turn off the lights / computer, close the door / windows. Use mime to check these phrases. Hand out the texts. Skimming: (1 min.) Ss skim the text for a specific information. 'Who packed the bags?' Walter or Janet? Monitor ss. In pairs ss compare their answers. Elicit the answers from the ss. Reading for detailed information: (3 min.) Ss read the conversation again. They put a tick next to the things the Thompsons have in the bags. Monitor them to check that they are on task. In pairs ss check their answers. Elicit the answers from the students. Show the answers on w/b

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

- Ss look at the past simple sentences on w/b. - Highlight the sample sentences. Demonstrate on w/b (power point slide) E.g Walter: Did you turn off the lights? Janet: Yes, I did. I turned off the lights and your computer. Ask the following questions and elicit the answers from the students. Is it about now or past? Is it a positive or question sentence? Which word is verb? What word do we use for questions? What is the answer? What is the difference between this verb (pointing out the question form) and this verb (in positive form)

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Elicit the meaning of the past simple tense from the students and ask CCQs. (Refer to LA sheet.) Invite a student to come up the board and try placing it on the timeline. Elicit the form of the past simple tense from the students and CCQs. (Refer to LA sheet.) Elicit the pronunciation of '-ed' and model and drill it. (Refer to LA sheet)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Hand out the texts. Students do the controlled practice by completing the verbs in the correct form in the past simple tense. Monitor them and check if they need help. Peer-checking: Students compare their answers. Elicit the answers from the students.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Pair work. Hand out the cards. Students do semi-controlled practice by using the phrase cards. Students ask their partners what they did last night They give answers to their partners in turns. E.g. Partner A: Did you watch television last night? Partner B: No, I didn't. Monitor them and help them if needed. Nominate a few pairs to check.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students stand up and mingle. Ss ask different people what they did last year and they take note. They can use the phrases on the board.(3 minutes) Eg.Did you travel by plane last year? Yes. Where did you travel? to Japan. Ss report their partners' answers Eg. Adem travelled to Japan last year. (If time) correction / fb
