Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading and scanning in the context of ghosts.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in the context of "ghost"

Procedure

Warmer/ Lead in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows the visuals of ghosts and asks: "Who are they? " T elicits answers and asks: " In stories, where do they live?" Students are expected to say haunted housesand the teacher indicates the haunted house flashcard. Then in pairs, Ss discuss these questions: " Have you ever read or heard about strange stories?" "Do you believe in ghosts?" "Have you had a strange experience? If so, please explain. How did you feel?" T elicits answers

Pre-Teaching Vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • To introduce new vocabularies

T gives matching activity HOs. Ss are expected to match the words with their definitions in groups of three. T gives an answer key and on WB, the teacher shows the stress of some words. T drills as a choral and individual repeat. Then the teacher asks some CCQs related to words also she uses some flashcards to make the check the meaning of words.

Reading for gist (3-4 minutes) • To practice reading for gist by deciding the main idea of the text.

T gives them folded HOs and Ss are expected to read only first paragraph quickly then they will select the main idea from a-c. T asks: " Are you going to read quickly or slowly? " Then theacher elicits answers and asks: " How did you decide?"

Reading for gist (5-8 minutes) • To practice reading for gist by matching headlines to the paragraphs.

T asks: " Read the whole text and match the paragraphs 1-4 to the a-d. Then Ss will check in pairs. T elicits answers.

Reading for specific information (4-6 minutes) • To practice reading for specific information by completing the table.

Sts will complete the table with specific informations from the text. In the table, Ss will write the descriptions of ghosts, who saw them and where were they? "They check in pairs. Then T elicits answer to get feedback.

Reading for detail (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with more detailed reading task

T gives HOs and Ss will read the sentences and write T /F. They check in pairs.T asks: " How did you find the answer? Which line refers to an answer?" T elicits answers and writes them on WB.

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide Sts with a fluency speaking activity

In groups of three, Ss will create their strange stories. They will decide the event and they will explain: " What was it?" "How did they feel?" "The characters?" "When and where the story takes place" T reminds them: " At the end of the lesson, we will select the most weird one."

If Time Activity (0-0 minutes) • To provide Sts with further speaking practice

T uses mingle for this part. Ss are expected to ask: " If you meet ghosts, what do you do? " "How do you feel?" They walk around and ask these questions to each other. After they sit, T asks for ex: " Do you remember what does Metin do if he meets ghosts?" T elicits answers.
