Description

In this lesson, the students will expand their vocabulary and knowledge of the topic of relationships.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of relationships in the context of types of relationships.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation/discussion in the context of types of relationships.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. In pairs, think of all the people you have talked to in the last 24hrs; what relationship do they have to you? 2. Share your answers with the class.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

In pairs, work on the following task: 1. Read the words in the box in 1B. 2. Read the questions. 3. Get back to the words in the box and answer the questions.

Highlighting (5-7 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

In pairs, work on the following task: 1. Listen to the six sentences in 1C. 2. Read the words in the box. 3. Listen again and start ticking the words in the box. 4. Share your answers with the teacher.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

At this stage, the teacher will teach the following of the new vocabulary: 1. Meaning: eliciting the meaning, pictures and CCQs. 2. Pronunciation: IPA, drilling individually and chorally. 3. Form: explain the type of the word.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

In pairs, work on the following: Six of the words have two syllables. Find the words and underline the stressed syllable. Say the words aloud, putting the stress on the correct syllable. At this stage, the teacher will provide support with IPA and stress.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In pairs or small groups, discuss the following: 1. Can you think about one man and woman who have played essential roles in your life? Who were they? Why was the relationship important? 2. Do you think men and women are different in these roles? How? At this stage, the teacher will walk around, record notes, and provide little support on the targeted language.

Feedback (5 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

To provide feedback on fluency.
