Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide writing practice of a postcard in the context of writing to a friend.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students to develop their reading skills for gist in a postcard to a friend.
  • To provide practice of paragraph structure and revision.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T opens with question: If a tourist came to your city, what would you show them? Why? T demos with example of his hometown. 2 minutes in BORs. T nominates 1-2 Ss to share.

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

T shows sample postcard. T asks Ss to read through the postcard quickly and answer questions: What kind of letter is this? Where is the writer? Has the writer had a positive experience so far? 1 minute to read and think of answers. T nominates 1 student for answers.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T shares Google Form - Postcard Structure with Ss. T asks Ss to complete the form in pairs to discover the structure of a postcard. 3 minutes. T shares answer slide for Ss to double-check their work. T moves on to form and appropriacy slide and shares Google Form - FA Postcard Language. T demos first question and sends Ss to partners to complete. 3 minutes. T reveals answers for Ss to double check their own.

Productive Task(s) (13-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T shares writing task options. "Now that we’ve seen the structure and language in a postcard, let’s write our own. You may either -option 1, option 2. Find your name in the presentation (DEMO) and write. Less than 100 words. You have 10/15 minutes. Message me in the chat for any questions."

Feedback and Error Correction (7-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T instructs Ss to peer check with assigned partners using provided checklist on slide 8. 5 minutes (or more depending on time). T looks over student work and writes in any errors on language feedback slide.
