Description

In this lesson, the students will be introduced to a set of reading skills that will lay the foundation for following readings throughout the year. The text is about a multilingual family and the advantages of speaking more than one language.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about bilingualism in the context of language.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of bilingualism related vocabulary in the context of language.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Do you speak languages other than English and your mother tongue? 2. How can be speaking another language benefit you in the future? The students will work in pairs to answer the questions and then share their ideas with the teacher.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1. Students will go through the text and locate the words they do not know with their eyes first. 2. The students will go through the text again and highlight/underline the words they do not know. 3. The teacher will elicit the meaning of the words that the students do not know.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1. The students will try to guess the topic of the text from the title. 2. The students will read for gist and have a quick discussion about the topic of the text. 3. The students will read the questions in exercise B and then return to the text for another scan reading. 4. The students will return to questions in B and begin to answer the questions in pairs. 5. They will eventually share their answers with the teacher.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

In exercise C, the students will read for more specific details. 1. The students will read the questions from 1-6. 2. In pairs, the students will return to the text and find the words. 3. The students will then share the answers with the teacher.

Post-Reading/Listening (5-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1. The students will read the questions in exercise D. 2. They will return to the text for a more extensive read. 3. The students will return to exercise D, and in pairs, they will take turns asking each other the questions. 4. The students will share their answers/opinions with the teacher.

Homework • To provide extra practice of the target language.

Use some of the new words to make five meaningful sentences.
