Description

In this lesson , Ss will be reading an article about "Extreme interviews" and the type of "extreme" questions which some companies now use at job interviews.The vocabulary focus is on working out the meaning of new words in a text from context.

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with practice in reading for gist and details, and deducing meaning from context through a text about extreme interviews,

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce Ss to vocabulary related to extreme interviews, To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To get Ss interested in the topic

To write the title "Extreme Interview" on the board and ask the Ss if they had had an interview of any kind; job interview, interview to get to university. I would ask them about the type of questions they usually expect in such interviews.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible and to get them think about what they are going to read about.

I would show the class a picture of a lady who is in a middle of an interview with a male figure but with a head of a (dinosaur. The picture is taken from the English File coursebook. I would start asking questions to elicit answers related to the topic of "Extreme Interviews" (ex 4a). I would try to have a short discussion to provide some important vocabulary needed to understand the text.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To ask the Ss to read for gist to check the ideas from the pre-reading stage

Ss will be divided into groups. I would give the Ss a limited time (a minute) to read silently the text and try to find out how they would answer the question in the picture "What sort of dinosaur would you be ? (ex 4b) # I'll let Ss check their answer in their groups

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging reading tasks in order to deduce meaning of vocabulary from context.

# Ss are going to read the article again carefully in their groups. They will try to work out what the underlined words and phrases might mean. Ss have to guess the meaning of some vocabulary inside the context. # I'll let the Ss check their answers in groups before the whole class feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To allow Ss to respond to the text and do follow-up task on a similar task and some productive skill (speaking)

I will ask the Ss about their opinion of extreme interviews and if they are a good way of choosing candidates. I ask them which of the following question are likely to be used in a real interview? # On a scale of 1-10, how weird are you? #Does life fascinate you? # If you were a car,What car would you be? # Which Tv character are you most like? # Room, desk,or car Which do you clean first?
