Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of the past tense modal possibilities in the context of everyday occurances

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of everyday occurrences

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will have the students make guesses on what occurred prior to the three images.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

They will be given the google form in the chat and told they have 1 minute to send it in. I will have them check with a partner via DM to see if they got the same answer then I will show the responses to everyone.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will highlight the modal possibilities found in the google form and explain that this is what we are working on today.

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

M- In the Meaning slide as a class we will decide if the modal is showing certainity about an event or unsure-ity about the man running. I will call on students to decide when the word should go along the line plot F- I will show them the equations for creating TL and examples where we can highlight the different parts. I will also show the differences between the negative and affirmative P- I will explain the slide and lead choral practice

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students will be sent the google slides to fill out a slide of their own , I will have put their names on their slide prior. I will show an example response to Q1 and all the possible answers. I will recommend they look around at other slides if they need help. They will have 4 minutes to complete. Then I will quickly look through the slides and highlight good sentences. Then I will send them to breakout rooms to discuss their responses.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In breakout rooms they will discuss and try and agree on a likely past event that explains the sentences. They will have 7 minutes to discuss and then I will bring them back and provide OCB on things I heard throughout the lesson.
