Description

In this lesson, students learn about how to ask for or give directions of a location and also learn some places and how to get there. They are going to learn how to ask about a location using where.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of giving direction and transportation.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of using where for asking about locations in the context of how to get to places.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this stage, i'm going to start with a story about myself about being lost in a new city and asking for direction. Then i ask student if they are good at giving directions and talk about their experiences and being in a city for the first time and asking for locations.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

For this part, i'm going to make students familiar with some vocabulary related to places and giving directions by showing and reading them in the handout and giving pair works for practice.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

In this stage, students are going to learn about using where for asking about the location of a place and using it to replace the names of places for answering.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

For controlled practice, i prepared a game for practicing vocabulary and also some exercises that are provided in the handout.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

For this part, i prepared a video that is for practicing understanding giving directions and also some exercises that are provided in the handouts.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

For free practice, i prepared two activities. for the first one i will put photos of some places on the whiteboard the i will blindfold a student and ask another student to give directions to him or her for a place and the other one should listen and draw it on the board. For the second one, i will make pairs and give every pair a printed maze, then ask one of them to close their eyes and the other one to give directions to exit the maze. The pair that finishes first is the winner.
