Description

In this lesson, students learn about 3rd conditional through Test-Teach-Test approach. The lesson starts with 'This is hangman' (_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ) ~ Imaginary situations. Followed by: Stage 1 - Matching the if-clauses with the correct main clauses (Exercise 1)-test the students' knowledge of the target language. Stage 2 - Teach the language items the students don't know + revision. Stage 3 - Students will do tasks 2, 3, 4. Finally students will practice via speaking/writing activity via watching a clip

Imaginary situations (Third conditional)-teaching material

Main Aims

To provide clarification, review and practice of Grammar (Third conditional)

Subsidiary Aims

To provide speaking and/or writing practice through watching a video in the context of mixed conditionals

Procedure (37-45 minutes)

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and get Ss thinking about imaginary situations (Mixed conditionals-stress on Third conditional)

Teacher will play a classic letter guessing game hangman on the white board. Ss will be shown a set of blank letters and they will have to guess what the word is. They guess by picking letters and seeing if they are in the word. However if you pick a letter that is not in the word a man is slowly drawn. With each wrong letter guess the man is drawn more and more. When the man is finished he is hung and the game is lost. The vowels appear on the left and the consonants on the right.

Test the students' knowledge (5-7 minutes) • To test est the Students' knowledge of the target language (conditionals)-Stage 1-Test-Teach-Test teaching approach

Ss are given exercise 1 (part of a test). Ss need to match the If-clauses with the correct main clauses. Ss do task on own and check in pairs followed by feedback/check answers. Teacher will monitor Ss.

Stage 2 - check meaning/highlight form/highlight pronunciation (10-12 minutes) • To convey meaning, form, pronunciation of the TL (conditionals), in case students do not know it.

This is a teach stage where I will be teach and revise language items that students do not know or forgot using the white board.

Stage 3 - Test whether all Students have understood the target language (8-10 minutes) • To provide practice to check understanding of the TL (mixed conditionals)

Students will read and answer exercises 2-3, page 30 from Inside Out Upper intermediate Student's book. Teacher will monitor. Feedback will be done by giving Answer key to students,.

Stage 4 - Mr. Bean in the swimming pool (10-11 minutes) • To provide further practice of conditionals

Teacher will play Mr. Bean at the swimming pool clip and will pause the clip and ask questions. For e.g. 1. What would you do if you were Mr. Bean? 2. What would you do if you saw Mr. Bean? Or teacher asks students to complete the sentences using mixed conditional phrases. • If Mr Bean was clever….. • If he wasn’t scared of heights….. • If he hadn’t gone to the swimming pool….. • If the lifeguard hadn’t stopped him……. This activity is partially freer activity and half semi controlled.
