Description

In this lesson,students will learn grammar, ''Wh- questions'' of simple past tense (was/were). They will be elicited on what they already know, they will study on question words, forms& pronunciation of simple past 'to be'. They will perform tasks on this subject mainly in the context of memories of the past.

Main Aims

  • To provide review, clarification and practice of the language used for wh- questions of simple past 'to be' in the context of memories.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a memories in the context of birthday or anniversary

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher sticks a memory game picture on the board and explain how to play this memory game.Then teacher wants them to stand up and makes them pairs.They will ask questions about the past such as 'Who was your first girlfriend/ boyfriend?' or 'What was your best present?'. They will try to answer these questions and then they can change their partner and ask somebody else while they are mingling.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

They will sit down and look at their handouts which was a memory game. There are some gaps on the game and T wants them to fulfill these gaps with the correct auxiliary verb (was or were).They first do it on their own and then they check it with their partners. Then, We will discuss if there are any mistakes as a whole class activity.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T will use the WB and elicit Ss on what do they already know on this matter. Getting back to memory game, T will try to get the topic from the students, so they should think and talk in pairs. Then when I get the right order of the words, I will write them on the WB to make it clear how to ask a question with simple past tense using wh- questions. Focus after on Form & Pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T will pass them a handout which has a reading text on it. T wants them to read the text and answer the questions about the text and after they finish completing exercise they will swap their papers with their pairs and check the answers if they are right or wrong.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T will give them the exercise she prepares. In this exercise, students will make sentences with the given words. After they finish their tasks, they will check the answers with their partners and we will discuss them as a whole class discussion

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

First, T will mention about her best memories for example, her wedding ceremony or first anniversary and wants them to talk about their memories. Ss will stand up and find a partner and ask 'what was your best memory?? They will talk about this subject and T will monitor them if there is a mistake, T will correct it at the end of the lesson as a whole class discussion.
