Description

In this lesson, I will cover verbs in the past simple tense and introduce the lesson in the context of discussing entertainment and activities participated in in the past. The lesson includes activities that check for understanding. The lesson ends with a free speaking activity to practice the target language.

Main Aims

  • To review and practice grammar in the past simple tense in the context of discussing entertainment and activities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking about previous entertainment/activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will ask sts if they liked David Blaine's magic stunts and have them discuss if they have ever seen magic tricks in the past. T then asks if they consider magic a form of entertainment. Introduce entertainment context with lexical set.

Test (7-10 minutes) • To test student's knowledge on irregular verbs and past simple tense

T will hand out table and have sts complete the chart. Check in pairs. After they complete chart, have them choose three of the words in the past tense and write a sentence using them.

Stage 1 (8-10 minutes) • To introduce grammar lesson

T will ask sts when we use past simple tense. T will then go through each use and provide examples of how each use is used.

Stage 2 (6-8 minutes) • To check students' understanding of the different usages

T will instruct sts to complete HO CCQ exercise to check for understanding. Check in pairs, then discuss.

Test with Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T will pass out scrambled sentence exercise and instruct sts to complete. Sts check in pairs and read sentences aloud.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T will group sts in to 3 or 4 and give them each a type of entertainment (music festival, sporting event) and have them tell a story in the simple past about it. Story does not have to be real. Sts will then discuss as a group.

Free practice 2 (6-8 minutes) • To practice speaking about entertainment

If time allows, have sts get up and walk around in order to complete "Find Someone Who" activity.
