In this lesson, students will be shown a picture of a magician and asked if they have seen a magician onstage or on TV, if yes what did she/he do. After vocab. pre teaching stage, students will read a text about an American magician called David Blaine for gist, specific information and details (to answer comprehension Qs.). This will be followed by a speaking activity through which students will discuss which of the magician's stunts were more interesting, why etc.

Main Aims

  • To practice reading for gist, specific info and details through a text titled "David Blaine, the new Houdini" in the context of magicians in the past/today

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide free speaking practice in the same context


Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T will show a picture of well-known magician in Turkey and ask Ss what his job is and if they have seen any other magicians onstage or TV -T will elicit answers and asks Ss to discuss what a magician does -Ss will discuss in pairs WCF

Pre- Teaching Vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • To activate/revise previously known vocab. and introduce new ones

-T will give matching exercise HOs (match the words with their definitions) -Ss will work in pairs WCF (For unknown words pictures will be used) -Necessary vocab. will be highlighted focusing on MFP -T will drills, choral and indiv. repetition

Reading for gist 1 (6-8 minutes) • To practice reading for gist by mathicing headlines to paragraphs

-T will ask Ss to walk around and skim the text, paragraphs of which are put on the walls of class -Ss will try to match the headlines (put on the board) with the paragraphs (one headline will be left out) (Ss will be taking notes while walking around to match the headlines) WCF

Reading for gist 2 (4-5 minutes) • To practice reading for gist by putting photos in an order (to exploit text even further)

-T will ask Ss to skim the text to put the photos in the order -Ss will check in pairs WCF

Reading for specific information (5-6 minutes) • To practice reading for specific information by answering questions T asks

-Ss will get into two teams -T will ask several specific Qs related to text -S will scan and answer those questions -Team with more answers will be the winner WCF

Reading for details (9-11 minutes) • To provide Ss with more challenging detailed reading

-T will give comprehension Qs HOs -Ss will work in pairs to answer the questions WCF

Post-reading (5-7 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to expand on what they have learned

-T will ask which of David Blaine's stunts they think was the best or the most dangerous and why -Ss will discuss in pairs WCF Delayed error correction, as necessary

If time activity (Speaking) (8-10 minutes) • To practice speaking for fluency by comparing professions

-Ss will get into small groups -Ss will asked to compare being a magician to other professions (each group will compare a different profession) WCF -Best profession will be chosen -Delayed error correction as necessary
