In this lesson the students will first be presented lexis regarding directions (left right). They will later use this lexis to complete a speaking activity where they will have to use to find the missing parts of a two-floor hotel, which is the main activity in the lesson.


Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of asking for directions and finding places in a hotel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of direction words in the context of looking for places in a hotel


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start by telling a short story about myself getting lost in a hotel and ending-up in the lobby in a bathrobe while I was looking for the spa.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

The students will be shown pictures describing directions. We will cover Left, Right, Along and straight. Here we wil also briefly do exercise (speaking 1) on page 40.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

We will listen to a record. The studnets will be asked to fill in the gaps in the provided transcript for the listening record. After this, they will work in pairs and ask and answer each other's questions on the locations of several places.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

The students will work in pairs to completed exercise 3d Finding the hotel shop. The pairs who can complete the blank areas they are given inside a hotel will be awarded 100 Monopoly money during feedback.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

The students will be asked to describe the place of a shop inside the hotel in front of the whole class during the final feedback session.
