Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation about family time in the context of family

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students are put into breakout rooms to discuss the questions on Slide 1. They are given 3 minutes Teacher's instructions: Now join the breakout room and discuss the questions with your partner. Take a screenshot of these questions so you can work together.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre-teaching/checking vocabulary using a family tree picture. Put students into pairs to work out the relations between the people pictured. Check as a whole class with CCQs (e.g. how many uncles does Greg have? What is Greg's grandfather's name? etc.)

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ask students to have a look at the words in the box. Give instructions: listen to the audio and make 3 sentences with the words from the box [they were all pre-taught/revised at this point] based on what you hear. Teacher gives an example: plays back 10 seconds of the recording and then writes 1 sentence on the board 'Mary has 10 cousins, all girls'. Pairwork check + whole class check

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Teacher asks students to read the task carefully. TTT: 'What part of speech goes into each gap?' TTT: 'Is this task about the present or the past?' (PAST) TTT: 'What Past Tense did you study with Yasemine?' (PAST SIMPLE) TTT: 'How do verbs end when they are in the past?' (-ED) Plays the recording twice, pairwork check, then whole-class check

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Teacher puts up discussion questions on the whiteboard/slide. T: Now you go to breakout rooms and talk about these questions with your partner. You will have 6 minutes. How many questions are there? Do you discuss in pairs or alone? Feedback on content only. No checking for accuracy since sensitive topic, and goal is fluency
