Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of Present Simple Vs. Present Continuous in the context of work.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about present simple (activities we do every day or usually) vs present continuous (activities we are doing now or around now) in the context of work.
  • To provide deduction reading practice using a text about present simple (activities we do every day or usually) vs present continuous (activities we are doing now or around now) in the context of work.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T greets Ss T shows a slide with an image of people working (Google Jamboard), and asks Ss What are the people in the image doing?. 1 minute T shares the link of the google Jamboard presentation where Ss need to discuss in Breakout rooms, in pair or trios the following questions: What sort (type) of company is it? Would you like to work for a company like this? 2 minutes T nominates one student from every pair to share their answers to the rest of the class. 1 minute

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a listening or situation

T plays the audio of "three employees describing what they are doing" (2min), and sends the link to a Google form where the Ss will answer individually for Gist. 1 minute Do you have to write or select the activity? Select Are you working individually or in groups? Individually Ss answer in the same link Task 1: Tick/select the activity each employee talks about. 2 minutes Ss go to breakout rooms to check their answers, T plays the audio again if needed. 3 minutes T selects a couple of students to share and justify their answers according to the listening. 1 minutes

Clarification (10-11 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T shows and shares a Google slide where Ss will read and classify some sentences using timelines for present simple (for activities we do every day or usually) and present continuous (for activities we are doing now or around now). 1 minute Ss solve the exercise in pairs or groups in breakout rooms to discuss their answers. 4 minutes T will check the Ss understanding of the meaning of the target language (using Concept Checking Questions) 2minutes Which are the sentences that express something we do every day/usually? Ss give examples, (simple present) Are these activities happening now or around now? Yes Elicit the form (Auxiliary and verb conjugations) Model and drill the pronunciation (chorally and individually, if necessary) to ensure the Ss know when to use rising or falling intonation. 5 minutes

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T shows and shares a Google form with some prompts where Ss have to write sentences or questions using them, and work the first one as an example. 2 minutes Ss solve individually the exercise. 5 minutes Are you writing or choosing the correct options? (writing) How much time do you have for this activity? (5 min) Ss go to breakout rooms in pairs or trios to check their responses. 3min T asks specific students to share their answers to the whole group. 2 minutes

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T shares a Google Jamboard where Ss will read and discuss the following questions in breakout rooms, in pairs or trios, and models the possible answers. 5 minutes Do you think your salary is good? Do you like your job? Are you working on a special project at the moment? T will nominate some Ss to share their opinions about the questions. 2min

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-5 minutes) • Feedback and DEC

T shares a Google Jamboard with some common mistakes to Ss, where they have to spot the errors. 5 minutes
