A grammar lesson on present continuous/simple in the context of a reading

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of present continuous/simple form in the context of work activities

  • To provide practice of the present continuous and simple tense

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students will answer the question "How are they spending their days?" about the photo in slide 2. I will ask the specific questions a-d and write their answers on the slide.

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will show them how to complete the google form then I will send it in chat. They will receive 1 minute to read and answer the 2 questions. I will have them chat with a partner via DM and then I will show the responses to the questions in OC.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will spend this time reading the definition and the formula for present continuous. Then I will select three students to read the example sentences I provide

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

First I will tell them they will be working on their own and underline all the present continuous verbs they can find in the reading. I will share a link to the presentation and tell them to find an empty slide and put their name in it. they will receive 1 minute to complete this task. I will choose one to go over with the class making sure they got them all correct. Then I will start sharing screen and move onto slide 12 where we will add the present simple verb and compare the two. I will have them find an example of the present simple and present continuous to put along with the definitions. Finally I will move onto slide 13 and ask the students to decide if the sentence is correct or if it needs a fix and what that fix is.

Controlled Practice (4-4 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

They will be sent a link and given 3 minutes to complete the fill in the blank paragraph. I will provide them with the answer to the first one. After the 3 minutes We will quickly go over the answers as a class.

Free Practice (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will send them a message in the chat of the questions I want them to respond to and examples of responses they might use. I will put them right into BRs . They will get 7 minutes in the BRs and I will listen in on the conversations and for the final minute of class I will go over any feedback that is needed.
