Materials

Abc cline
Abc picture
Abc table of used to form

Main Aims

  • To provide sts practice on grammar.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide sts and opportunity to speak.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T paste a picture of "Merve" on the board to show Merve´s life now. T elicit sentences in the present simple (She has a Hundai Accent car. She drives bigger car now. She drives faster. She drives out of town. She loves her car.) In a different part of the board, T will paste another picture of Merve showing her past.Establish that sts realise that these things were true in the past - but not now. T will elicits or model sentences (She used to have a Peugeot 206. She used to drive smaller car. She used to drive slowly. She didn´t use to drive out of town. She used to have a love/hate relationship with her car.) T will get sts to think of some more sentences about Merve - then about themselves in the past (I used to bit my nails when i was a kid).

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading.

T will let sts write about how their lives were different when they were children. Compare with their partner and make notes of things in common to report to the class. (We both used to climb trees.)

Useful Language (10-12 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T will now introduce the meaning, form and pronuciation of the word used to through cline and tables.

Productive Task(s) (10-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T will now let sts to work in pairs. They will be given the HO´s number1, let sts look at the following sentences. Then let sts replace where it possible, the past simple with used to / didn´t use to + infinitive. Do a peer checking, then whole class feedback. Then let sts change the sentences in the activity so that they will be true for them. Then WC feedback.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T will divide the class into groups and tell sts to use the topics in the box and their own ideas and compare their life now with their life 10 years ago. (ex. I used to sleep 8hours a day, but these days I only sleep for 4 hours. I used to watch Discovery Channel but these days I usually watch CNN news. I used to have a smaller car but now my car is big.)
