Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about giving advice in the context of how to improve your English

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T greets Ss T shows a slide with two images of different Ss (Google Jamboard), and asks Ss to spot the differences. 1 minute T shares the link of the google Jamboard presentation where Ss need to discuss in Breakout rooms, in pair or trios the following questions: What was your favourite lesson at school? Why did you like it so much? What was your least favourite lesson at school? Why did you dislike it? 2-3 minutes T nominates one student from every pair to share their answers to the rest of the class. 1 minute

Text work (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T projects a Google site with a short forum entry showing the usage of the functional language: I think you should..., You should..., You shouldn't..., Why don't yo...?, I (don't) it's a good idea to... Find... -highlighted in bold- and ask Ss to answer the reading task (individually) according to the reading. 2minutes Are you reading for general understanding or for details? (for details) Are you working individually? (Yes) Do you have to select true or false or write? (select true or false) Ss go to breakout rooms, in pairs or trios, discuss their answers. 3min How much time do you have for this activity? (2 minute) T asks Ss to tell their answers in class as a whole and confirms the correct answer with them (only the ones that Ss had trouble answering). 1minute Why did you choose that option? What helped you make that decision?

Clarification (11-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T shows and shares a Google slide where Ss need to put in order some words to create sentences (related to the functional language). 1 minute Ss solve the exercise individually and then go to breakout rooms to discuss their answers. 4 minutes T will check the Ss understanding of the meaning of the target language (using Concept Checking Questions) 2minutes Do these sentences talk about asking for, or giving advice? (giving advice) Is it formal, informal or neutral? (It will vary according to the sentence) Elicit the form (Constant and variable from the sentences) Model and drill the pronunciation (chorally and individually, if necessary) to ensure the Ss know when to use rising or falling intonation. 5 minutes

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T shows and shares a Google form with 3 problems where Ss have to select the best pieces of advice for each case. 1min Ss solve individually the exercise. 2min Are you writing or choosing the correct options? (choosing) Is there only one correct option? (No) How much time do you have for this activity? (2 min) Ss go to breakout rooms in pairs or trios to check their responses. 3min Are you working in individually? (No, in pairs) How much time do you have for this activity? (2 minutes) T asks specific students to share their answers to the whole group. 1min

Free Practice (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T shares a Google Jamboard where Ss will find some problems related to academic matters. 1 minute Ss will select one or two problems and will come up with some suggestions in breakout rooms, in pairs or trios. 5 minutes T will nominate some Ss to share their opinions about the questions. 4 minutes
