Description

In this lesson students learn new vocabulary through guided discovery based on pictures in the context of describing people.The lesson starts with a discussion of what they see in the pictures posted on the WB. They are then exposed to the target language through a matching activity that they match the TL with the pictures on the WB. After the introduction of meaning, form and pronunciation, they will be practicing the TL through a guided practice that they will read short paragraphs about 3 people and they will identify who they are by match them with the pictures of people. They will peer check their answers and WC FB will be given. Finally a semi-controlled activity that they will describe their best friend and read them to the class. Error correction in the end of the session.

Main Aims

  • To provide useful vocabulary in the context of describing people as they will be doing comparatives and superlatives in the following 2 sessions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide writing skill by using the TL in the context of describing people.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation using what they wrote in "describe your best friend" section.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will set the context by putting the photos of two Turkish celebrities on the WB and ask what they know about them, elicit their answers but if they cannot come up with appropriate assumptions, I will ask them if she is beautiful or he is handsome, to check what they already know.

Exposure (13-15 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

1-The pictures are set on the WB with the words on the other side and if they cannot match them, I will show them with my gestures to make them guess 2-instuctions: match the words with the pictures 3-they match the words with their meanings in pairs

Highlighting (9-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

1- HO1 is distributed 2-Instuctions: there are 4 people here and here(pointing the paragraphs) are their descriptions, match the words with the correct picture.(I will try to give instructions as simple as possible). 3-They will be given 5 mins for this activity, when they finish FB will be given on the board.

Clarification (13-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

1-I will show them a picture on the board and tell that she is my favorite celebrity and write 3 sentences about her on the board. Show them the form: she,he is beautiful/tall/short.. I am tall/short.. you,we,they are tall/short.. Then I will show them a picture of people standing next to each other and ask them two write 3 sentences about 3 of them in pairs.

Optional Wrap-Up Activity (3-4 minutes) • To provide a small fun listening activity

If I still have time after feedback and error correction I will give the class a short picture dictation. As I read the description, the students draw the picture of the character. When they are finished, they can compare each others’ drawings. Finally show them the real photo.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-4 minutes) • To highlight that learners understand the MFP of the TL properly

1-Have the students make proper sentences by using the prompt cards to check their understanding
