Description

In this lesson, students learn about the common adjectives and the two basic rules governing the position of adjectives. The context is a quiz about the USA which includes common adjective/noun phrases such as The White House and New York which should be familiar to SS in their own language. Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice using the adjective/noun in a less controlled speaking activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To generate students' interest in the topic of the American culture.

The teacher presents the word " Egypt " on the board and asks the students what is typically Egyptian. The students tell things that are typically Egyptian such as; The Nile river, Giza pyramids, Koshary, the High Dam, and the Egyptian Pound. Then the teacher asks the students to work in pairs to write down what is typically American. The teacher checks their answers and then he gives his list. Some of the items might guide the students in doing the quiz.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language to enable the teacher to identify the specific needs of learners concerning a language area and addresses these needs suitably.

The teacher asks the students to individually do the quiz about the American culture in Ex.1a. Then in pairs, students will check their answers. The teacher sets the time and gives feedback.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage.re students had difficulty in the first test stage

The teacher presents the vocabulary he found the students struggling with while doing the quiz. ( some of the challenging words were anticipated beforehand). He does this by following the ECDW framework. He elicits the meaning of the new vocabulary from the students through descriptions, definitions, and providing antonyms or synonyms. Then he checks their understanding of the concept. After that, he drills asking the students to repeat individually and in chorus. Finally, he writes the word on the whiteboard or presents it on the PPT.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • To check that the students have improved in their knowledge of the TL and use the new TL.

The teacher asks the students to do the activity in page 127 Ex.3A b. Then students have to correct the wrong phrases. Students will listen to an audio(people speak fast) and write sentences using the adjective/noun phrases.

Feedback (3-5 minutes) • To praise good use of TL and to correct errors in the TL use.

The teacher goes through the quiz and checks the students' answers quickly. He might ask questions to give them a hint for the correct answers if there are still any.

Free practice (2-3 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language.

A ball game: One student will hold a ball and say an adjective. Then he throws it to the other student who will say a noun when he catches the ball. to form an adjective/noun phrase to experience the TL.
