Description

The students will read and focus on sub-skills (gist and detail) in the context of different birthday celebrations around the world.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about birthday traditions with a global context

Subsidiary Aims

  • Build class community and individual confidence in reading capabilities
  • To provide clarification of tech words (traditional, celebration, coming of age, ceremony) in the context of culture

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Tell Ss they will be discussing in groups the reading on slide 1. I will proceed to read the question aloud and then ask if it needs to be read again. Next I will put everyone in breakout rooms to discuss for 2 minutes. I will bring everyone back and

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Move onto slide two where I will direct everyone to the link in the chat for the powerpoint. Locate their slide with their name on it and spend 3 minutes working individually. Show the correct word to definition on the slide for everyone to see. Form: #1 Ask, is traditional an adjective or noun? #4 What would you call this?- give ex. of "Coming of Age" book or movie Pronunciation: show slide of emphasis and lead the class in repeating back to me the pronunciation.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Provide Link to Google Form #1. Instruct for Ss to read as fast as they can because they will only have 2 min to read and answer the question at the bottom to choose the best title. Make partners and have them direct message the other person to check their answer. Give demo of what this will look like by sharing screen and writing a message to a student saying " I answered answer B, what did you say?" after 30 sec of chatting via direct message I will give the correct answer to the class

While-Reading/Listening #2 (11-13 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Tell Ss they will be reading the article again but this time they should take more time reading. If they come upon words they don't know just try and move past them. Also while reading keep in mind the 6 questions at the end. Students will get 7 min to read the article and answer the questions. After completing the form they will be put in breakout rooms to discuss their answers. This will take place for 3 min. OC: go over the answers 1.T 2. they go to temple/wear kimonos 3. all of the above 4. because it represents the freedom to come and go from the house 5.Yes 6.No

Post-Reading/Listening (15-16 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask Ss How they spent their last birthday and what their favorite memory is and if they could plan their own birthday what would they do? Give them a min just to think and then have them go to breakout rooms to share their thoughts for 5 min. Suggest vocab from the lesson. OCDF about good things I heard and any final things to correct.
