"What's in the news?"

Description

In this lesson, students will talk about the news. They will discuss with each other how they get the news and if they watch or listen to the news everyday. Students will learn new vocabulary related to the news. They will be given some photos and asked to listen to the news and put them in order. Students will then listen for specific information in order to choose the correct information given in the news. Finally, students will practice speaking by asking each other to describe a given photo.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using verbs and nouns from news stories in the context of talking about the news.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking practice in a conversation in the context of talking about the news.
  • To provide clarification of verbs and nouns from news stories in the context of talking about the news.

Procedure

Lead in (5-7 minutes) • to introduce students to the topic " talking about the news" in order to make them think about the news in general.

Students will first look at 4 pictures and they will be asked to describe what they see in the picture. One picture will be of a TV that has two people, a male and a female, presenting the news. The second picture will be of the google web site which is used to depict the internet. The third picture will be of a Turkish newspaper. The fourth picture will be of a radio. After look at the pictures and eliciting the words : internet, TV, newspaper and radio the students will be asked to discuss in groups the questions in exercise 1. Then the whole class will discuss their answers altogether.

Teach new vocabulary. (8-10 minutes) • to teach the new vocabulary which are verbs and nouns from news stories.

Students will be taught the new vocabulary by the use of pictures and gestures. The teacher will first show the picture and try to elicit the word from the students. If they do not know it, the teacher will then teach it and ask the students to drill it. The teacher will write how to read the words that students find difficult to read. The teacher will also demonstrate the stress in the word. Choral Drilling, Individual drilling.

Pre-listening activity (5-7 minutes) • to predict what words are in each news story.

Students will look at photos A-D (page 58) of some TV news stories. They will match the words of the new vocabulary with the right picture. The words will describe what each picture is about. Students will check their answers with the person next to them. Students will then come to the white board to match the words with the pictures.

Listening for gist (6-8 minutes) • to understand the general idea of the news

Students will listen to the news and put the photos in order. They will then check their answers in pairs. The whole class will then check the order of the photos.

Listening for Specific Information (8-10 minutes) • to understand specific information about the news

Firstly, the students will be asked to read the sentences in exercise 3 b. They will then be asked to listen to the recording and choose the correct answer in each sentence. The recording will be paused after each news if the students find the listening challenging. The students will check the answer of the news and then listen to the other news and so on. The students check their answers as a whole class. If the recording is not paused and they listen to the recording from start to finish, they will check their answers in groups of 3 or 4 and then as a whole class.

Post- Listening activity: Speaking (5-7 minutes) • to practice speaking about the news.

Each student will be given a picture. They will be asked to explain to their partner what the picture is about by using the new vocabulary. Some of the new vocabulary will be written on the board to aid the students form their sentences. The students will then have to look at the picture and choose the appropriate word to describe the picture. They will then swap partners and do the same thing. The whole class will discuss about their answers and the pictures.
