Tteaching grammar of 'used to' with speaking exercises


Main Aims

  • For Ss to understand the grammar of 'used to' through meaning, form and pronunciation

Subsidiary Aims

  • For Ss to practice thr grammar in controlled and semi-controlled speaking


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss pictures of old Shrangri La, Atlantis and El Dorado Where is this? Can they recognise? Elicit, prompt, tell

Test #1 (5-7 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Use the test question - How do you think life used to be different then? Put into 3 groups, tell Ss to discuss and answer the question. Demonstrate - For example in Atlantis there used to be exotic animals, in Shangri La there used to be donkeys, in El Dorado there used to be lots of gold monitor and write on A4 - 2 good sentences (with used-to), 2 good sentences (without used-to), 2 incorrect sentence. Ask Ss for fb on what they think the differences are between now and in those days.

Teach (18-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Draw on the board a smile face and a sad face Show the sentences to students - ask, which do they think have good grammar, which have wrong grammar? Get them to put these sentences to the right place on the board. Ask them why they have put them there? Highlight the 'used to' sentences. What do these tell us? - Ask Ss - CCQ: Are these about the past? Are these activities finished forever? Were they routine activities? Did people do them regularly? Highlight the form - Elicit from Ss and write on board - how do we make a 'used to' sentence? How would we ask as a question? elicit whether 'used to' or 'use to' How do we use the negative? elicit whether 'used to' or 'use to' See wb plan in lesson analysis Now sentences on the board - pronunciation - drill chorally and individually and back-chain. Highlight the intonations for the questions.

Test #2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide controlled practice

Show Ss Exercise 1 ho - they work in pairs and replace the past simple verbs for 'used to' where possible. Do Ex. 1 together - read the sentence and get the Ss to notice the past simple and elicit the replacement. fb wc

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Freer pactice to personalise - Put Ss into different small groups/pairs Show photos of Istanbul 1970's, 1920's and 1700's Talk about fashion, transport, tourism, social life in Istanbul then. What did Istanbul 'used to' be like? Monitor, help if required, listen for some good example sentences that Ss use and where they have made some errors for later fb. whole class fb -
