In this class, Ss will practise jigsaw reading for detail in the context of news reports. Ss will also practise listening for detail showing the interest in response to news.

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in the integrated skills of reading for detail, and listening for detail.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will start asking the Ss about they get news. possible answers: TV, radio, newspaper, internet Ss look at the pictures and headlines. These two news reports are from the day after the TV news reports.

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

ex 5 b) Ss individually write on a piece paper V2. Check in pairs. Then they will listen and drill. The answers will be on the back of their chairs.

While-Reading #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Ss are in 2 groups A, B Group A read report 1 and answer the provided questions Group B read report 2 and answer the provided questions

While-Reading #2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T will re-mingle the 2 groups. Ss from group A will be in group B with questions of B and ask the group members. Ss from group B will be in group A with questions of A and ask the group members.

Post-Reading/Listening (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

ex 7 a) Ss look at the pictures on the board then look at the headings. After that, they will listen and match. b) T will Ss time to read sentences 1-6 and responses a-f. Then, they will listen individually and match. After that, Ss check their answers in pairs.

Speaking (7-9 minutes) • to give Ss practice in speaking to show the typical responses to news

ex. 8 a) Ss in pairs work on this exercise. b) Ss will be in 3 or 4 groups the will put the cut-ups in the correct columns in the table. The tables will be on the walls.

Pronunciation (5-7 minutes) • To give Ss practice showing them the stressed words in questions and responses to new.

T will write on the board * * * * * * Did you hear about that plane crash? No, where was it? Teacher will elicit from the Ss the stressed words. Ss listen and drill
