Main Aims

  • In this lesson students will practice and use functional language in the context of "a learning experience".

Subsidiary Aims

  • In this lesson students will practice listening for gist and listening for specific information in the context of "a learning experience".

Procedure

Lead in (3-4 minutes) • To introduce the context

Divide students into pairs and give the picture handout to one of the students in each pair. Ask those students to describe the pictures and other students to guess what the topic is about. If they cannot find out (probably not) tell them it is about learning something new.

Listening (4-5 minutes) • Listening for gist

Give the handouts to the rest of the students. Ask them to listen to the speakers and match them to the pictures. (Tell them they don't need to understand every detail, but just match the speakers to the pictures). Play the audio files. Let Ss compare their answers in pairs. Write/reflect the correct answers if needed.

Listening (4-5 minutes) • Listening for specific information

Tell Ss that they need to listen to the same audio files and complete the blanks with between one and five words. (5 words for only 1 of the blanks) Ask them to read the sentences for a minute. (If any of them asks what Yiddish is, just tell that it's a language) Play the audio files. (Wait for a while between each conversation) Ask them to check their answers in pairs. (Optional) Play the audio files again if really needed. Write / reflect the answers in needed.

Pre-teach vocabulary (3-4 minutes) • To introduce the new vocabulary

Elicit "take an interest in sth"(to start enjoying sth. / to become interested) and "pick something up"(to understand easily, to improve quickly) Ask CCQs. take an interest "If you take an interest in a hobby, is it new for you or not?" "Do you like that hobby or not?" pick sth up: "If you have a natural talent, do you pick something up easily?" Don't spend a lot of time on drilling as you will backchain later. Write them on the board.

Listening (5-6 minutes) • Listening for specific information

Tell Ss that they are going listen to the same audio files. Tell them to look at the phrases for a minute (tell them those phrases are under 2 different categories). Play the audio files. Ask them to check their answers in pairs. Ask them which phrases they heard.

Backchaining (3-4 minutes) • To improve pronunciation

Write / reflect 3 of the phrases / sentences on the board. Backchain. Show the linking, weak forms and sentence stress on the board.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To help Ss use the target language accurately.

Ask Ss to think about any of the sentences in the activity and make true sentences about themselves. Ask them to talk to their partners. Monitor for any errors. (If there are any, write them on the board and give feedback)

Freer Practice (9-10 minutes) • To help Ss use the target language more fluently

Show Ss the ppt. file and ask them what the person in the photo is doing. Make a model speech about your experience. Divide the classroom into pairs. (Make sure not to match 2 weaker / demotivated Ss to each other) Monitor them. Change their partners.
