Description

In this lesson students have the opportunity to improve their listening skill in the context of radio commercials and at the end of class they need to come up with an idea to create a short commercial to practice speaking

Materials

Main Aims

  • In this lesson students have the opportunity to listen to radio commercial for gist and specific information

Subsidiary Aims

  • In this lesson students have the opportunity to be creative and practice their speaking skill

Procedure

Lead-in (7-7 minutes) • To engage the students for the topic of listening

I start the class by showing a video clip and I elicit Ss' ideas about it. Than I ask them to tell me any funny commercials they can remember and why they think it is funny. I also introduce the word 'Slogan' and elicit if they know any famous slogans.

Listening for gist (6-6 minutes) • To check students general understanding of listening

In this stage students need to listen to the audio track (six radio advertisements) and try to answer the questions in the folded handout that is given to the students (Ex. 1) I get feedback from WC.

Listening for details (15-17 minutes) • To check students understanding of details in listening

Before doing the second exercise, I intend to pre-teach six words and because I need to play twice in this stage I have a handout for the new vocabulary items to save time. I write the words on the board and they have the meanings in their handouts. I ask Ss to match the words with their meanings and then they come to the board to write the correct number for each word. Next I drill the word and elicit the stress. Then I ask them to unfold their handouts and listen again and answer the second exercise. I probably need to replay it if Ss are not able to answer some of the questions. I need to monitor to check their answers. Then I get WC FB I also ask Ss to check in which radio ad they have heard the pre-taught words.

Post Listening Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide students to explain and report a clip to their peers

In this stage If I have 4 or 5 students I will divide them to 2 groups. First group sit back to the board and other group watch the video clip in mute mode and then they need to explain the story for the first group and they need to guess the product. They can ask questions. I will do the same thing for the other group. If I have just three students I will have this activity with three different video clips.

Filler (8-8 minutes) • To provide students to practice their writing skill

If I have enough time, I divide the Ss into two groups. I have prepared some words written on pieces of paper and they choose one of them. Each group has to write a short ad for their product in a way there is no direct mention of the product and then they read it and other group should guess what the product is. I intend to monitor them in the writing stage and help if needed.
