Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a poster design and presentation in the context of describing a dream house.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of house and furniture vocabulary in the context of describing a dream house.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask students "Is your house right now perfect? Are you happy with it?" Show pictures on screen of luxury houses. Students in pairs talk about which ones they would live in.

Exposure (2-3 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks

Show students teacher's own dream house poster. This is my dream house. It's big with lots of bedrooms so my friends and family can come see me. It comes with a maid to clean all of it. It has a big yard so i can have a dog and lots of flower gardens, but it has a gardener to take care of all of that for me. My house doesn't have a pool, because it's on Samal Island in the Philippines and the beach is just a short walk away. It has one room just to practice karate in and another room just for a home movie theater.

Useful Language (6-7 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Use poster to elicit these words onto the board. Pool Beach Home theater Yard Garden Balcony Bookcases Gym Gardener Maid

Brainstorming (4-5 minutes) • To provide an opportunity for students to brainstorm language needed for tasks

Students in groups of 3 try to write on strips of paper as many English words as they can that relate to a dream house. Students put these strips of paper onto a mind map drawn on the board. Class should now have a large word cloud to pull words from for their individual posters.

Poster Creation (11-12 minutes) • To create a visual prompt for later language production

Students in groups agree upon elements from brainstorming and draw their dream house.

Poster Presentation (14-15 minutes) • To provide students practice in speaking for fluency

Each group presents poster to WC and describes it in complete students. If time allows each group will answer questions about it.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Ask students which house they want to live in. Any ideas you want to add to your dream house now? Error correction on any spoken errors during production.
