Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information reading practice using a text about The Google Guys.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a group discussion in the context of The Google Guys.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

- I will start the lesson by telling Ss a personal experience for me about living without social media for 1 week. Then, I will ask them to discuss in pairs what would they do without internet for 1 week. (Timing 3 minutes) - I will nominate 3 or 4 Ss for O/C feedback.

Pre-teach key vocabulary (6-8 minutes) • To enable Ss to have sufficient vocabulary to do the tasks and prevent Ss blocking on key vocabulary central to the topic.

- I will ask Ss to match 5 words with their correct definitions. (Timing 3 minutes) - I will ask Ss to check their answers with their pairs. - I will display for them the answer key on PPP. - I will go through each word with highlighting form and drilling pronunciation with checking their understanding for meaning throughout the CCQs.

Reading for gist (6-8 minutes) • To practice reading for overall understanding.

- I will ask Ss to read the article about the Google Guys and to match the headings with their correct paragraphs. - I will set the timing of 5 minutes and encourage them to read for overall understanding not every word. - I will ask Ss to check their answers with their pairs. - I will display for them the answer key on PPP.

Reading for specific information (6-8 minutes) • To practice reading for specific information.

- I will ask Ss to read the article again and write (true/false) in the brackets with correcting the mistakes in the sentences. (Timing 5 minutes) - I will ask Ss to check their answers with their pairs. - I will display for them the answer key on PPP.

Reading for details (6-8 minutes) • To practice reading for details.

- I will ask Ss in groups to use the article and find out what happened in certain dates. - I will display the dates for them on PPP. - I will set the timing of 5 minutes. - The group that will spot what happened in each date will be the winner.

Follow-up activity (7-10 minutes) • To exploit the topic of the text for a productive skill (speaking).

- I will ask Ss in groups to discuss few questions of: 1) How much time do you spend using the internet? Why? 2) Which social media application do you use the most? 3) Give some advice to help reduce the time people spend on the internet - I will monitor Ss effectively to spot any language errors.

Content/language feedback (2-3 minutes) • To provide Ss with some error correction and feedback on their output.

- I will nominate few Ss for O/C feedback and I will ask them to choose the best advice. - I will write few sentences with errors on board and I will elicit from Ss the correction for language feedback.
