Description

In this lesson, Ss will develop their writing skills through writing a movie review. They will choose their favourite movie, observe a model movie review, learn the layout and some target language, and then write their own movie review. After this, they will give peer correction and then we will discuss feedback as a class.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To develop students writing skills through learning layout and organising ideas in the context of short review of their favorite movie

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop students functional language in the context of writing a movie review
  • To develop students speaking skills through gist, language and peer feedback tasks in the context of writing a movie review

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask Ss the questions: What is your favorite movie? What is your favorite genre? Who is your favorite actor?

Gist and Layout (4-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Show Ss the Jamboard with the model movie review and layout ideas Ask the Ss to read the movie review in BOR in pairs and move the layout ideas from right to left to the arrows for 3 mins OCFB with answer key (1 min). Ask individual Ss to annotate answers to these questions (1 min) Where is the title? Where are the main actors and characters? Where is the reviewer's opinion? Where is the rating?

Language MAF (6-7 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

MEANING I will show the Ss Slide 3 on the Jamboard In BOR in pairs I will ask Ss to move the meaning to the correct TL (2 mins) Instruction: "In pairs in BOR, move the meaning to the correct TL. You have 2 mins." ICQ - Are you moving the meaning or the TL? The meaning - How long do you have? 2 mins OCFB with answer key and CCQs to check understanding (2 mins) CCQs 1. This movie is about a boy... - Will you learn about the story? - Will I tell you about the characters? 2. Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, and Daniel Stern play the characters Kevin, Harry, and Marv - Does Macaulay Culkin act in the movie? Yes - Does Harry act in the movie? No 3. This is my favorite movie because... - Do I have an opinion about this movie? - Do I like this movie? - On a scale of 1 to 10 where does this rank in the top 10, 1 being the best? 4. I rate it five stars - Am I giving my opinion about this movie? Yes - What value am I giving the movie? 5 stars FORM AND APPROPRIACY (3 mins) I will show Ss slide 4 of Jamboard. I will elicit the fixed expressions and form of TL I will elicit Appropriacy from Ss using the Formality scale Eg. - Which TL are fixed expressions? Why? - Which TL are collocations? Why? - What is the form for "a boy" = indefinite article + noun - What is the form for "plays the characters" = Verb + definite article + noun - Is the noun singular or plural? - What kind of lexis is this? Collocation - Where does the TL go on the Formal Arrow? Annotate/mark on the arrow - Which TL is less formal? I rate it...

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Show Ss Slide 1 on Google Slides and give instructions for Writing Task Show Ss their personal slide and write their names there Show Ss template to fill in with questions to help plan their movie review Instruct Ss to plan their movie review for about 3 min (3 mins) After they have planned their review they have 12-15 mins to write it Explain to Ss that I will communicate with them/help them in the speaker's notes section below their slide I will monitor Ss by moving to and from the slides of each Ss and elicit corrections when necessary Instructions: "You will write a movie review about your favorite movie. Use the TL in red. Write 50-100 words. You will have your own slide. Spend 3 mins planning your review. Answer the 4 questions in the left box to help you plan. In the right box write your movie review. In the comments box at the bottom I will write comments to help you. After your plan you have 12-13 mins to write your review." Feedback and Error Correction (6-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language
