Description

In this lesson, the students will discuss gardening activities. They will also practice their listening skills through a recording based on the context of the envirnoment and being more green. Afterwards, they will practice their speaking in the same context, using the new vocabulary taught.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about home improvement in the context of the environment

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of the environment

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T writes 'Greenhouse' on the board T asks 'What is a Greenhouse?' After discussion, turn it in to 'Green house' T asks 'what kind of things can you do to be more green for the enironment?' Ss have 2 minutes to confer in groups.

Pre-Teaching (7-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Instruct the Ss that they will receive a HO of some book covers. In pairs, they must must circle which words they associate with the book covers. Use pictures to elicit the rest. The words are: 'car tyres,' 'dust and rubble', 'insulation,' 'sledgehammer,' 'wiring and plumbing,' 'flush the toilet' (collocation) and 'double glazing.'

Listening for Gist (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist - based listening tasks

T instructs that Ss will receive a HO and then listen to a recording on home improvements Ss must tick which ones they here They will have a couple of minutes to confer with their partners Whilst they're talking, project the answers on the WB

Listening for Detail (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging and detailed listening task

T instructs Ss that they will receive another HO and listen to the recording again Ss must answer the questions Demo the first one Play twice if needed Ss check in partners afterwards for error correction for a couple of minutes Whilst monitoring during PW, project answers up WC FB at the end

Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide practice for students' vocabulary production

T instructs Ss that they will receive a final HO Ss must get up, ask each other the questions and take note of the answers in the middle of the classroom to promote the kinaesthetic learners. Ss talk about what answers they found from their partners. WC FB Error correction
