Description

In this lesson, students learn about the past perfect tense and how it is applied in a statement to improve sensibility and flow. Students will be taught on different pronunciation and spelling of irregular past perfect tenses.

Main Aims

  • • To introduce and practice past participle verbs application in written and spoken statements. Use: Time up to a point in the past and for the earlier of two past actions.
  • To understand the use of past participles after past perfect simple, in that -ed always goes after regular verbs, and irregular verbs can be different than Past simple irregular because they are past participle..

Subsidiary Aims

  • Producing written examples of the grammar lesson.
  • To clarify that a single event in the past does not take had + past participle.
  • Negatives and asking questions with "Had+ past participle"

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Set timer 45 mins. -Open G. Slide 1 and 2. - Tell Ss "I had emailed my brother Vinny before class started." -Ask Ss, what did you finish before class? -T elicit answers inline with lesson. -T asks "Are we talking about actions in the past that are finished or continuing?" -Answer- Finished. -T Asks "In my example, did I finish writing the email first, or come to class?" -Answer "Emailed" -T mentions, "When one action is done in the past before another action also done in the past, we use "Had + past participle (Went, Emailed, etc)

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-T opens slide 3 -T prompts Ss to read screen silently. -T asks "Who left the party first?" - Elicited answer: Paul. -T asks, "Did both of these actions happen in the past?" -Elicited answer: Yes. - T says "Paul had gone home when Sarah arrived." "Sarah arrived after Paul had gone home." -Past participle, specifically for irregular verbs may differ: Send 2 page dictionary pdf -Past simple Example “Sarah arrived at the party.” -Past perfect: When Sarah arrived at the party, Paul had already gone home. (this happened further in the past)

Clarification (4-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-T opens G. Slide 4, T has Ss read quietly. -T reads time line, pointing on the times. -T takes note "Past simple Example “Sarah arrived at the party.” Past perfect: When Sarah arrived at the party, Paul had already gone home. (this happened further in the past)" -T opens G Slide 5 -T explains negatives/questions -T opens G. Slide 6, Review rule ones for usage. 1) Time up to a certain point, The earlier of two past actions, Not using Had for past single past actions, irregular verbs in past participle are different. -Send Ir. verb list doc to chat.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-T opens Google slide 7 -T instructs that we will work on this together, word document in chat. - Send word doc. in chat. -T does first question together. -She ________ (love) the present ) I had ___________ (give) her for Christmas. The movie had__________ (start) by the time we ___________(arrive). They _________ (close) the road because there had ____________ (be) an accident. Mary had __________ ( do, negative+past participle) before I ________ (met) her at home. - Loved, given Started, arrived. Closed, been. had not done, met. -T gives 3 minutes for task. -T goes over task. -T opens slide 8 Open G. Task CP 1, Go over first example. -Give Ss task link. -Explain Ss will be put into B. Rooms and be given 8 mins to answer and discuss. -Inform Ss. to share screens. -Inform Ss. not to submit, keep their answers on the screen. -T gives instructions once more and asks Ss to repeat the task. -T puts Ss into B. Rooms. -T monitors Ss and takes notes for Error correction. -T returns Ss to main room and goes over answers together.

Free Practice (10-14 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-T opens G. slide 10 -T explains instructions. -T will put Ss into B. Rooms to answer and discuss together. Ss do not need to submit, they should keep their answers on the board. -Use Had + Past participle to explain an action in the past that happened before another action also in the past. In the following sentences Make two parts of the sentence, One using HAD + PP to describe what happened later in the past and Subject + past simple to describe what happened sooner in the past. What did you do in your spare time before you started studying English? I had played a lot of Xbox before I started Celta. -What did you do in your spare time before you started studying English? -What did you do before you started working or going to University? -Had you ever been on a plane right after getting off a boat? -Had you ever said sorry for something you did wrong? -T will give instructions, send link, and ask confirmation questions for instructions. -T will give Ss 8-10 mins, puts Ss into B rooms. -T takes notes for DEC, and returns to main room. - T turns to G.slide 10 and does error correction of examples. -T ends lesson.
