In this lesson, sts focus on receptive skills of reading and sub-skill gist reading.It starts with a led-up activity. The context of the lesson is based on a text about My Day Yesterday. In this lesson sts read and test their understanding. They will do different activities which involve false/true and choosing the correct form of verb to be in the past,affirmative, questions and negative.

Main Aims

  • To make students practice reading for skimming, scanning and reading for details in the context of My Day Yesterday.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of was and were in the context of My Day Yesterday


Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Presenting two flash cards; one for yesterday and one for today to get the concept of yesterday using gestures.

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

1- Sts read the paragraph about my day yesterday for 30 seconds. 2- Ask them about was and were used in the text. 3- Sts read again to do the T/F activity and check in pairs. 4- Showing some cards of words and phrases to practice using was and were. .

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

1- elicit examples about was and were used in that text from sts. 2- Draw a table of verb to be in the present and in the past and highlight was and were.

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

1- Use CCQs to focus on meaning. 2- Drill the examples and focus on was with singular subjects and were with plural ones in the three forms; positive, negative and question. 3- Drill and focus on pronunciation of was and were and drill again.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1- Get sts HO1 to more focus on the TL. 2- Sts check with their partners. 3- Do FB as WC and focus on error corrections

Semi-Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

1- Get sts HO2 and give them clear instructions to get information about each other. 2- I monitor and get notes. 3- In pairs, check their answers with their partner. 4- Check as WC and do some error corrections.

Free Practice (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

1- Now sts have information about their partners, in groups A and B, they practice freer the TL and I monitor. 2-Do FB about was and were and give them a scanned picture which is a summary about the TL.
