Materials

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have had clarification of the Past Perfect tense in the context of historic events, and practiced present perfect in a controlled exercise.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have had practice using the past perfect tense in a freer exercise.

Procedure

Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T gives link to jamboard for lesson. T displays questions related to historical events: 1. Name some historical events that you can think of. 2. Are there any historical events that fascinate you? Why? Talk about it with your partner. T demos. Learners work in pairs in breakout rooms and discuss questions. T conducts OCFB and writes learners’ ideas on the board

Text Exposure (7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation and draw students´ attention to the target language

T shows short story about Titanic. Instructions: Read the story about Jack who was on board the Titanic. Fill in the gaps from the text to complete the sentences in past perfect form using the word box. T demos. Students have 6 minutes to complete individually. OCFB T displays answers, students individually check own work.

Language Clarification (8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T conducts OCFB and covers MFP for new target language. Students work individually to match the definition with the new target language. 2 mins to complete. OCFB elicit from students correct definitions. Students are displayed a list of past verb tenses for new TL. Students must choose the past perfect form for the verb from the list and do so individually. Students choose the correct structure from three options. T demos first one. Students have 3 minutes to complete task. OCFB to elicit answers from students and T reveals correct answers. T displays new target language in sentences from the text. T models sentence pronunciation and drills chorally and if necessary individually. T discusses in open class; sentence stress and linkages, eliciting from students as much as possible. 3 mins for this section.

Controlled Practice (10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are shown gap-fill past perfect work sheet. Students must use given verb and change it to the past perfect to complete the sentence. T demos. Students work in pairs in BOR to complete. 8 minutes to complete. OCFB T elicits answers from students and reveals answers.

Free Practice (10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Instructions: Choose a historical event, from the list or your own. Research it on the internet. Then tell your partner what happened using past perfect. T displays list of ideas of historical events. Students choose one or their own and research this for 5 minutes. Students share their findings in BOR with partner for 5 minutes. They are encouraged to explain what happened in past perfect form. T demos an answer about the Rainbow Warrior Bombing

Feedback and Delayed Error Correction (5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T conducts OCFB. T writes on the screen samples of learners’ production (including grammar and pronunciation) and sets a task in pairs for learners to identify the correct and incorrect sentences and correct the latter ones. Positive feedback on good language.
