Main Aims

  • Grammar - teaching the second conditional

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking - having the students speak by using if clause for second conditional.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show the students the picture of a lottery and a sad man. I will ask the students what is happening in these pictures. Why is he sad? When the students say that he played lottery but he couldn't win, I will say yes and ask them, what would he do if he won the lottery? and I will elicit the target language.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

I will give the students a handout which is about a survey including if questions. One student is going to be the person who is conducting survey and the other one will be the participant. After they finish all the questions, they will change their roles and do the same. While they are doing role-play I will take notes what they know and don't know and I will do error correction on the board and give FB.

Teach (9-12 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

I will use guided discovery technique to elicit the MFP. I will give them 3 model sentences that have CCQs under them. They will answer those questions. So that I will understand what they know and don't know. Secondly, they will write the form by themselves and they will check with their partners. After that, I will do WCFB.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

I will give the students one controlled practice which has brackets and they will fill in the blanks with the correct form of the verb. After that, they will check their answers together. I will do error correction if there is any and give the WCFB. I will give a semi-controlled practice. I will give the first sentence with "if" and they will write a sentece about them in the second part. They will share their ideas with their group.

Free practice (15-18 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will have colorful cards which are written animal names on them. I will ask the students to choose one and write 5 sentences, what would you do if you were a .....? I will give an example like, if I were an eagle, I would fly different countries every day. After they write their sentences, they will share their ideas with their partners. When finished, partners will be changed. If they make a mistake while they are writing and speaking, I will take note and do error correction. If we have more time ,we will have a ball. there will be cards on the desk. Some words are written on the cards such as ; animals, water, electricity etc. They will throw the ball and the person who they threw the ball will pick a card and create sentences like "if we didn't have water, we would die."
