Description

In this lesson, students learn some vocabulary in the context of public places. The lesson starts with questions and photos about which the places students may prefer to go and why they prefer these places. Their background knowledge on the target vocabulary is tested and the unknown words are presented through pictures or a context. Then,some tasks are given to students which enable them to use these vocabulary. These tasks mainly improve their lexis however they give students opportunity to improve their speaking skills as well so students can personalize the target language.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of lexis for public places in the context of favorite places to go in your city

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a dialogue in the context of favorite public places

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Lesson starts with some photos of popular cities in the world. Students discuss these questions in pairs: What can you see in these photos? What can you do in these cities? Would you like to go there?Why/Why not? Then,students share their ideas with the whole class. The focus is the public places in the pictures. So, teacher always try to focus the students on this context.

Test #1 (Matching activity) (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

During this stage, students have an activity which tests their prior knowledge. Students try to match target vocabulary with related pictures in pairs.Teacher observes the students and in the end, teacher can see the problematic words or points of target language. Students check the answers with other pairs. (Peer check)

Teaching Vocabulary (12-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

During this stage, teacher try to elicit the meaning of target vocabulary through a context and powerpoint presentation. ECDW stage is so crucial in this stage. Teacher also ask CCQs to be sure that students understand the meaning of words clearly. Stress is also emphasized during the lesson.

Test #2-3 (Activity 2-3) (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test.

In this stage, students have 2 activities: In the first activity, the students unscramble the letters and try to find the hidden words. This is a pair work and students try to discover the words together in a funny way. They check their answers with another pair. In the second activity, the students match the word cards with the pictures on the board.Then teacher gives feedback.

Free practice (Speaking) (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In this stage of the lesson, students work in groups of 3-4. They discuss about a question. Then, one student in each group is nominated to share their idea with whole class. The aim is to enable the students to use the target language in Speaking skills.
