Main Aims

  • to provide practice for listening for gist and detail in the context of health issues

Subsidiary Aims

  • to introduce and provide practice for the grammar topic; modal verbs of speculation
  • to provide a semi-controlled speaking practice of introduced the TL

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students while getting them interested

T will tell sts that he has been having these headaches for the past month, and he feels awful. T will instruct sts to share their ideas; what may be wrong with the T and what else can go wrong. They will brainstorm doing a PW for one minute. T will ask them to share their ideas. T will note down some of the TL (modals of speculation) that is used by sts on the right side of the WB, intentionally dividing them into two categories (in terms of their function). T will ask sts what is the difference between them (expression of certainty/expression of possibility); then T will title them as sure/not sure, while eliciting the main title of speculation.

Pre-Listening (6-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and introduce the relevant vocabulary

(Vocab. match) T will instruct sts to match the words with the correct definition in pairs (PW) for one minute. T will project the answers on the WB as a FB and ask CCQs to make sure the vocabulary is understood by the sts.

While-Listening 1 (3-4 minutes) • To provide practice for gist listening

(Gist Q and A) T will instruct sts to listen to the audio track answer two questions that are projected on WB; "Which countries are compared?", "What are they comparing them with?" After listening, sts will check their answers in pairs (PW). T will do a T-S as FB.

While-Listening 2 (16-17 minutes) • To provide practice for listening for specific information

(Gap-fill) Sts will be instructed to listen to the audio track again and fill-in the gaps. They will check their answer in groups of three (GW). T will project the answers on the WB. During the FB T will do more CCQ concerning the forms of the TL (future/present/past), adding more information to the right side of the WB. (combine ex.L3 and ex.G1).

Post-Listening (10-11 minutes) • To provide a semi controlled speaking to practice the introduced TL

In groups of three (GW), each st will receive a different symptom. T will instruct other two sts to speculate on what might be the reason of his/her symptom using the modals of speculation. Sts will take turns to share their symptoms letting other two to speculate. T will do a demo before sts start the exercise. For the FB, T will do delayed error-correction. Symptoms are: headache, sore throat, high temperature.
