Description

In this lesson ,students are going to learn about grammar structure :used to " that is used to talk about actions in the past that finished completely . Students are going to understand the meaning ,form ,and how it is pronounced when it is combined in a sentence . Students are going to apply the rule in controlled and free practice to use it correctly .

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Used to in the context of past personal habits

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a free speaking in the context of personal habits

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will ask his Ss to think about some habits they were doing them in the past and now stopped . T asks each pair to discuss their answers . T elicits some answers and write them on the board .

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T will tell Ss about the habits that he was doing in the past and Ss register some notes about his habits . Ss will check in pairs the notes then write sentences about these habits . T divides Ss into three groups . T gives Ss some mingled sentences to rearrange about the habits he said T elicits the answers and writes them on the board . T will give Ss a sheet in it the habits to check Ss' answers . T writes the correct answers on the board .

Clarification (5-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T provide Ss with the meaning and that "used to " is used to talk about past habits that stopped now . T checks the meaning of the sentences : I used to sleep early . I used to get up late . T uses CQS : Do I sleep late now? yes . Do I sleep early now ? No . Do I get up early now ? Yes Do I sleep for long time ? No . T introduces the form S+used to + infinitive S+did n't use to + infinitive . Wh +did + s+ use to + infinitive ? T introduces the pronunciation I used to sleep early . ● / juːst / Ss practice the pronunciation to use it correctly .

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T will give Ss a worksheet to do it individually (MCQs) about use to . Ss check in pairs . T elicits the answers and writes the numbers on the WB then he asks each S to write the answer on the board . T gives feedback about the correct answer .

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T will give Ss exercise 2 and ask them rewrite the sentences again using used to . Ss check in pairs . T elicits the answers and writes the numbers on the WB then he asks each S to write the answer on the board . T gives feedback about the correct answer

Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To place the stress on the right place

. T asks his Ss to place the stress on the right place in the sentences . Ss check in pairs . T plays the audio track to check the answers . T provides Ss with the feedback.

Free Practice (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T divides Ss into three groups ,each group chooses one to be an interviewer for the rest of the group, The interviewer asks the rest about old habits that they are not doing them now . T elicits some answers and discusses the mistakes on the board for error correction .
