Description

This lesson focuses on the topic of professional life. Ss will review and learn adjectives and phrases used to describing jobs, then, Ss will listen to the recording of 3 people who talk about changing their occupation. Between the tasks, Ss will have plenty of opportunity to express their views on the subjects related to work and career.

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of adjectives describing jobs.
  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about three people who changed their careers in the context of describing jobs

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a converstaion in the context of jobs and career

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set the context for the lesson and engage Ss' interest.

Write on wb: Job(s) I'd love to do; Job(s) I'd hate to do Tell Ss to discuss in pairs giving reasons. Elicit a few ideas-w/c

Focus on lexis (8-10 minutes) • To introduce Ss to target vocabulary and to allow them to practise it for accuracy and fluency.

Put Ss in pairs. Distribute the vocabulary hand-outs(ex2 p 51 New Cutting Edge intermediate SB)to each pair. Ss try to work out the meaning of new vocabulary and provide an example of a job(s) that requires the skills. Ss can come up with more than one job names that fit the descriptions. Provide an example There are a lot of opportunities to travel- business person, teacher, tour guide etc. Elicit s few examples and explanations(wc)

Free speaking practice (4-6 minutes) • To provide freer speaking practice and to personalize the topic.

Provide model before setting the task I always look for a secure job, because I don't like to change jobs too often. I hate competitive jobs, therefore ı could never work in sales Put Ss in pairs. Ss, using the vocabulary from the previous exercise, discuss what they would look for in a job and why. w/c fb

Focus on listening (10-12 minutes) • To listen for specific information

Ask Ss whether they have ever left their jobs to do something different(w/c) 1. Pre-listening task Distribute the photos with the short texts about the people from the listening task. Ask Ss to quickly read the texts and answer two questions in pairs: What jobs did the people use to do? What are the people doing now? 2. Listen for specific information. Elicit meaning of the words:solicitor, plumber, run a hotel, give up, move to the country Tell Ss they will listen to three people who changed their jobs. While they listen they have to answer 3 questions(wb) about the three people: a. Why did they leave their old job? b.What are the good things about the new job? c.What are the disadvantages? Play the recordings separately, so that the Ss have time to answer questions about each person. After Ss finish listening, ask them to compare their answers in pairs. w/c fb 3. Post-listening(2-3mins) Ss discuss two questions in pairs: Would you like to do what any of these people are doing? Why/Why not? Do you think they have made the right decisions? Why/Why not? Would you like to change your current job? Why/Why not?

Free speaking practice (8-10 minutes) • To give Ss speaking practice and to personalise the topic.

Ss work in pairs. Each pair is given discussion topics related to jobs. Monitor and and assist when needed.

Delayed feedback (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback

Write on the wb a few mistakes that Ss made during the lesson together with the correct versions. Ss get one 1 minute to decide in pairs which form is correct and why. W/C fb
