Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of functional language for showing interest and asking follow-up questions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

For this stage the students are going to be answering some questions about the topic. The teacher will share her screen with the questions and do some brainstorm with the students to anwser the two questions. -How do you show interest in a conversation? -What do you say? The teacher will make a demo to give students some ideas about how to answer.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The teacher will play an audio (with two conversations) just once, and will ask the students to do some brainstorm about the content. -What's going on? Script: Emily:How was your weekend? Tim:Terrible,I was ill all weekend. Emily:Oh dear. What was wrong? Tim:I had a really bad cold Emily:What a shame.Are you OK now? TIm:Yes,Much better thanks, And how was your weekend? Emily:It was OK, I stayed at home on Saturday Tim:Oh, right. What did you do? Emily:I did the washing ,checked my emails, watched TV-you know, the usual. And then on Sunday I went to the cinema Tim:Oh nice. What did you see? Emily:It was called A day In The Life TIm:Oh yes, what was it like? EMily: It was great,I really enjoyed it TIm:Yeah, I'd like to see that. Oh we're late for the meeting .Let's go! SECOND CONVERSATION Simon: Hi , How are you? Rachel:I'm very well thanks I went away for the weekend -to Spain! Simon: Wow! where did you go? Rachel: We went to Madrid .it was wonderful! Simon: Oh, great! Who did you go with? Rachel:My friend, Ingrid Simon:And where did you stay? Rachel: We stayed with some friends from university Simon: Oh nice Rachel:What about you? How was your weekend? Simon: Not very interesting .I worked all Sunday Rachel.Really? What did you do? Simon:I wrote that report you wanted . It took me 10 hours Rachel:You're joking ! When did you finish it? SImon:at 11 o'clock last night . Here it is Rachel:That's great ! Thanks, Simon Simon:No problem Rachel.Ok,let's start this meeting. Where are Emily and Tim? Simon: Here they are. Tim: Hi there, Sorry we're late .Emily wanted to get a coffee Emily: Tim!

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Then the teacher will share a link to google forms and they will answer an excercise, they'll need to listen again to the audio and select the expression they hear from a bunch of options. Select all the expressions you hear in the conversations: -You're joking---stated -Don't say that-----not stated -Oh, right -----stated -You can't be serious-----not stated -Wow----stated -Oh dear-----stated -What a shame-----stated -I see----not stated -Really?-----stated -Oh nice-----stated Oh great----stated After this excercise the teacher will do open class feedback to check answers

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher will share a google forms link where the ss will need to cover meaning and form. MEANING EXCERCISE: Choose the correct meaning for each expression Im happy for you--Oh great, Oh nice Im sorry for you---What a shame,Oh dear Im surprised---Wow!, Really!, You're joking! Im not surprised----Oh, right FORM EXCERCISE: 1-Oh-----, what's wrong?---dear 2-What a------Are you okay now?----shame 3-EMily----I stayed at home on saturday ------right TIm: oh---- 4-Emily: I went to the cinema----nice TIm:oh------ 5--Rachel: I went away for the weekend to Spain! Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

For this stage the ss will need to have a little discussion using the target language instructions. 1-Just one person of the team is going to tell the story 2-The person who’ll be speaking will share a short anecdote about one of the best experiences they’ve ever had in their life.(travelling,a situation,meeting somebody) 3-The rest of the team will try to answer with interest to the anecdote using the expressions reviewed (wow,oh right,oh nice,oh great,really?)and will ask for more information (and when was that?,and what happened later?) The teacher will make a demo to give the students some ideas of their stories and ansewrs example. one of the best things i've ever experienced was to go to los angeles because that was the first time I ever travelled abroad sushi: really? how was it? The students will be in breakout rooms.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

in this stage the students will be able to have a freer practice so they can share ideas and final thoughts and at the same time they'll have the opportunity to practice the target language they will be put into breakout rooms. 1-Tell your partner(s) about a good experience 2-Talk to your peers about what you did last weekend 3-Talk to your peers about a bad experience
