Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • In this lesson students will practice listening in the context of "being a good guest".

Procedure

Lead in (4-5 minutes) • To introduce the context

Open the ppt file Ask Ss what the pictures are about Show them the questions and ask them to think and talk in pairs Ask their opinions

Matching Activity (5-6 minutes) • To introduce the new vocabulary

Divide the classroom into 2 groups. Tell Ss that they need to match the phrases to the definitions Ask them to find the definitions outside the classroom and tell them that the first group to finish will win. When they finish the activity, correct any mistakes

Drilling (5-6 minutes) • To enable natural pronunciation

Play the audio file 8.4 and ask Ss to repeat Reflect the phrases about welcoming on the board Show the linking Ask each S to repeat Ask Ss if they know why they are repeating

Listening (optional) (3-4 minutes) • To practice natural speaking

If Ss can pronounce the phrases in the previous activity naturally this activity could be skipped to save time Play the audio file and ask Ss to repeat the final line

Listening (5-6 minutes) • Listening for gist

Show Ss the pictures of Morocco map and Thanksgiving photo. Ask CCQs Tell Ss that they are going to listen to 6 conversations and in these conversations some people did something wrong and some are asking for advice. Tell them to identify these people. Ask their answers Write / reflect the correct answers if needed

Listening (5-6 minutes) • Listening for specific information

Tell Ss that they need to listen to the same audio file and complete the blanks Play the audio file Ask Ss to check in pairs Get their answers Write / reflect the correct answers if needed

Optional Practice (5-6 minutes) • To enable the Ss for a further practice

Give the handouts to Ss Ask them to put the words in the correct order Ask them to check in pairs Ask them to read in pairs

Free Practice (12-15 minutes) • Encourage speaking

Divide the students into groups and give them the role play handout Tell them they could use the materials in class Ask them to think with their partner(s) Ask them to act out the situation
