Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of vocabulary related to arts in the context of theatre, art, and music
  • To provide clarification and practice of second conditionals in the context of making a proposal about events of art and culture

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a discussion in the context of making proposals about a project

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T opens a ppt and shows pictures that show vocabulary of arts. T asks Ss to look at the word box on page 99 and say a related word or words for each picture. Some words are elicited in the ppt. For the rest of the word box, T asks Ss to work in pairs to put the words into the correct category (Theatre / Art / Music). After they complete it, the answers are checked (whole class) and Ss answer the discussion questions in part C in pairs.

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T puts Ss into pairs. T asks Ss to read the sentences in Grammar, Part A (p. 99) and discuss the questions stated below. The answers are checked altogether.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T asks Ss to find and underline the differences between the four sentences in Grammar part A. (Sentence 1 uses first conditional, while the other three sentences use the second conditional). It is expected that Ss find the difference in the form.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T refers Ss to the grammar box (p. 99, part B) and Grammar Hub (p. 138). T asks Ss to complete the box individually. The rules in the box are checked altogether.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss do exercise A in Grammar Hub (p.138 - 9.1). The answers are checked altogether. For exercise B, Ss are divided into pairs and correct the mistakes in the sentences. Answers are checked as a whole.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss are given a worksheet and asked to check part A in pairs. T explains that they are going to complete the sentences with their own words and compare each other's ideas. T distributes Ss to breakout rooms and monitors the pairs. When the pairs have finished completing the sentences, Ss come back to the main room and the T asks for some complete ideas for some of the sentences in the worksheet. After the activity is finished, T corrects major mistakes that have been observed (if necessary).

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T puts Ss into groups of 3: Student A reads the box on page 99 (community music centre). Student B reads the box on page 152 (immersive theatre). Student C reads the box on page 154 (modern art gallery). T asks Ss to dicsuss the proposals and find a final answer to the question: Which project would be the best for the city?
