Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about art in the context of art events

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher welcomes the class. Teacher explains that today's topic is about art and asks some questions such as "What are some categories of art?", "How does art make you feel?", "Which art form is your favorite?" T tells that they are going to compete in 2 groups to match famous artworks to their painters. When they are done, they have to come back from the breakout rooms and submit their group answer in the chat box. T shares the pdf in the chat box and starts the breakout rooms. Ss do the activity in their groups and come back to the main room. The answers are checked and the winner is announced.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

(p. 98) Ss are asked to look at the picture in the book and read the short paragraph. After that, T shows the picture of an empty warehouse and explains Ss that that is an empty space (warehouse) near the Prep School, and the Municipality of Üsküdar informs the school that this will be a place involving culture and arts for the students. T asks Ss to make proposals about how to use the warehouse. Ss are put into groups of 4 to share their ideas. When they come back to the main room, T elicits some ideas from students.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

(p. 98) Listening, Part B: T tells Ss that they are going to listen to the three finalists from the competition speaking at a council meeting. T tells Ss to look at the pictures. Then T tells Ss to listen and match the finalists' names with the pictures. The answers are checked as a whole. To further check understanding of the gist, T asks some specific words and phrases from the listening and asks Ss to tell which finalist was talking about it. These words may include "Recording studios, musical instrument, live concerts, watch a play, immersive theatre, audience and actors, gallery, exhibitions"

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

(p. 98) Listening, Part C: T tells Ss to read the questions and try to answer them from what they remember. T plays the audio again and Ss answer all the questions. T puts the Ss to breakout rooms so that they can compare their answers. After that, the answers are checked as a whole. If necessary, T shows the audioscript and the answers are altogether elicited.

Post-Reading/Listening (3-4 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T puts Ss in pairs and asks them to compare their ideas for the warehouse for university students with the ideas of the finalists. Which proposal sounds the best? How would you rank all of the proposals?
