Description

In this vocabulary and reading lesson students will read anout different subjects people study and learn the vocabulary. First, they'll see the neames of the subjects and then read about those subjects and speak about different degrees people do and why they do them.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, detailed and inference reading practice using a text about unusual degrees

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of degree names in the context of university

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss answer questions "Is it important to go to university? Why or why not?" and "what are the most popular degree subjects in Turkey?"

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

SS match the names of degrees with pictures. Then they answer questions about those particular degrees such as "Are these subjects common in Turkey?" or "Why do you think people study these subjects?"

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

SS do the exercises 2A and 2B.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

SS do 2D in pairs.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

We discuss the SS answers to 2D together and compare answers
