Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of reported speech in the context of the book "The Great Gatsby"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide writing practice of reported speech in the context of book chapter


Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher refers to the reading text they read in the previous lesson and asks them to work in pairs and discuss what they have learnt about Gatsby (exercise d on page 103) After that they share their ideas with whole class.

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The teacher tells sts to read part 2 and 3 in the reading text on p. 102 and answer the following questions: 1. Does the woman and Gatsby know each other or is it their first meeting? 2. What happened at the end of the part? When the sts find the answer individually, they compare their answers with their pairs and after that the T receives whole class feedback.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

A ppt is shown to the students.The teacher asks some CCQ's to clarify the form of the target structure. 1. Are these sentences in past or present? 2. Should I use "I" or "he,she" here? They analyse positive / negative and question forms by eliciting them from the sts.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T distributes handout for controlled practice. First, ss do it on their own then check in pairs. At the end, T provides answers on the screen.

Free Practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

SS, in groups of 3" are asked to write part 4 for the book "The Great Gatsby" on Padlet by using the target language. When they finish, T provides whole class feedback.
