Description

In this lesson, students learn about reported speach through guided discovery based on a reading text. The lesson starts with reminding the text that was read previously. This is followed by introducing a reported sentence from the text asking some questions like who said this sentence? and Who reports the sentence? What did the man tell him? Could you write inquotation marks? Finally there is some controlled practice and through sentence formulation and free practice via final role play activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Reported Speech in the context of a novel excerpt.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To make students more engaged with real life usage of reported speech.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher asks students what they remember about the conversations in the previous text to prepare them to find out where reported speech is used.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher shows a reported sentence from the text and asks some questions to elicit the usage of reported speech like Who said this sentence? Who reports the sentence? What did the man tell him? Could you write in quotation marks?

Highlighting (4-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Teacher opens the song ''Somebody that I Used to Know'' that includes various reported speech use and send students a document includind the song's lyrics but also having blanks in the reported parts.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Exercise B and C on page 103 can be done as a whole class activity. They write their example sentences while teacher is explaning the details.

Controlled Practice (6-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students play quizizz game that is about reported speech. It will enable teacher to control students' answer and give feedback before semi-controlled and free practice.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Teacher opens a video that is from the movie ''The Hobbit'' asks them them to report what they heard and they are also supposed to answer some engaging questions in the video.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Teacher divides classroom into four and asks them to create some gossips what other group members say about their one year in FSM. Finally, all students decide which student will be expelled from the school.
