Main Aims

  • Students will be better able to recongnize and understand the vocabulary related to Money and finance

  • Students will be better able to produce this vocabulary

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T tells a personal story about selling and buying a car and asks for suggestions on saving money. (T wants to sell his car for 200.000 TL and her budget is limited. T wants to buy a better car that costs 500.000 TL. T asks students how to get this money. T elicits words from students like a loan, debt, borrow, credit card, etc.)

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T uses Money Facts in Turkey flyer to make students meet some more familiar facts first before reading the given text in the book P. 92. T asks students to read the facts about Turkey first and read the text in the book secondly to compare information in pairs.

Highlighting & Clarification (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T asks students to have a look at the words in bold in the text on P.92 and checks if they have understood them or not by asking CCQs.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T asks students to work on the meaning-matching activity on their own first (Part.b on p.92), then checks their answers with their partners. Next, the answers are collected from the whole class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T forwards to Part. C on p.92, gives clear instructions and explains what 'collocation' is. T provides an example on the exercise first and lets the students work in pairs so that they can learn from each other. Then, T asks for the answers.

Freer Practice/ Productive Activity (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T tells the students that they are journalists for a newspaper and doing interviews with people on personal money facts. Students can go around the class and interview 2 people in the class. Then they will report their findings to the class. T monitors while students interviewing each other and takes notes for delayed feedback.
