Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of free time activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask my Ss to think about the things they like to do in their free time. What did you do last weekend?

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask my Ss to read the text and tell me 1) what is the text about? and 2) what is the topic of the game show?

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will ask students to read the text again and identify four things Mark likes and one thing he doesn't like in the text. I will share screen so that I can underline the sentences on my screen as they identify them.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning I will show a google document with the five statements from the text that show likes and dislikes. I will ask students some CCQs for students to identify meaning. When do these statements refer to? Past? Present? Future? Has Mark did these things before? Do we know exactly when he did these things before? Form I will ask students to identify the different components in the structure: I like + verb + ing CCQ: Can we use other words besides like? Which words? (do not like, really like, love, hate) I will show students the box of words from exercise 1 and ask them to identify the -ing words and make them into sentences. I will write sentences on the white board. Pronunciation I will read the sentences out loud and ask Ss to identify which words I am stressing using the whiteboard. I will ask Ss to drill.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will ask students to chose the correct verb using 4 sentences from exercise 2a, then use those verbs to fill in the blanks in the sentences in 4 sentences in exercise 2b using the correct form of the verb. I will ask Ss to compare answers in breakout rooms. I will provide feedback to the whole class

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will ask Ss to answer the following questions: Imagine you go on a first date, what is important for other people to know about you? Conduct feedback and delayed error correction on activity.
