Description

In this lesson ss will review the vocabulary to describe life events. They will notice language in a story, using categorizing to discover the meaning, practise intonation and stress. Finally, they will practise telling stories about their friends or famous people they admire.

Materials

Abc Cutting edge, Student's book, Cutting edge, workbook.

Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson, ss will have practice topic-related vocabulary and speaking about life events.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To revise vocabulary and phrases.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Introduce a picture of a famous Egyptian couple -Kinda Alloush and Amr Youssef. Ask how much do ss know about them (if no, tell ss stages of heroes life). 'Do you know these people? They met at work, they fell in love, they got engaged and got married and live happily ever after. So today we are going to talk about important events in life'. Ask ss, what stages of life are important. Let them all give ideas.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Show ss ex. 1a and 2 onto a PPT slide. Ask sts to take a photo/screenshot. Ask them to put the words/phrases under different categories (Love and relationship, Home and Family, Education, Career). SS work individually and then compare answers in breakout rooms. Nominate ss for each category to announce and show them the answers. Comfort them if they are not aware about some, because you will explain them.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Expected unfamiliar words: retired, leave home, move home, become a widow/widower, a gap year, drop out of Use MPF to give proper explanation. Elicit meaning via examples, use CCQ to make ensure the meaning. Drill pronunciation Ask about forms

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Provide students with the text for controlled practice. Offer ss to fill in the gaps with the phrases from today's vocab, using prompts. SS work individually and then compare answers in breakout rooms. Show ss to answers when they are back. Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Tell students a personal story. Offer them to think about a person, whose life is remarkable (friend, family member, celebrity). Give ss 3 minutes to choose a person they want to tell about and then send them to share to breakout rooms. Ask them to listen to stories carefully and choose the most exciting one.
