Description

In this lesson,students will practise words and phrases of ability in the context of things people are good at or bad at. Students will also improve their speaking skills by talking about their own abilities.They will not only practise the meaning of words but also the form and pronunciation.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson Students will be able to use the vocabulary of abilities in terms of meaning,form and pronunciation.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson students will better speak about the things they are good at and bad at by using the vocabulary of abilities.

Procedure

Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To introduce the topic of ability and to interest students

Teacher hangs 6 photos of different activities on the board and tells Ss that he is good at three of them and bad at the other three.Ss work in pairs and guess what the teacher is good at or bad at.Then Ss tell the teacher their guesses and the teacher confirms the answers.After that Tecaher asks students to work individually and write three activities they are good at and bad at. Then Ss share their notes with the class.

Presentation of Vocabulary(Meaning 1) (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the target vocabulary to the students

Tecaher gives the tasks handout to the Ss and asks them to read the sentences and try to get the meaning of the phrases in bold. Ss work alone. Then the teacher pairs the Ss and ask them to share their ideas. Tecaher elicits some responses for the phrases.

Presentation of Vocabulary(Meaning 2) (3-5 minutes) • To teach the meanings of new vocabulary

Teacher asks Ss to focus on exercise 2 and match the phrases with the correct group.Ss work alone.Then they peer check. Tecaher checks the answers with the whole class.Teacher use CCQs to check whether they understand the meanings of the phrases.

Presentation of Vocabulary(Form 1)) (3-5 minutes) • To practise the form of the phrases

Teacher asks students to look at exercise three and to fill in the gaps with appropriate options.Ss work alone and they fill in the gaps. Then they peer check.Teacher checks the answers with whole class and reflects the filled gaps. Teacher writes the correct forms on the board.

Presentation of Vocabulary(Form 2) (3-5 minutes) • To teach the form of the new vovabulary

Teacher asks Ss to look at exercise 4 and fill in the gaps with correct options.Ss work alone and fill in the gaps.Then they peer check.Teacher fills in the gaps with whole class and writes the phrases on the board and explains the grammatical structure of the phrases.

Presentation of Vocabulary( Pronunciation) (3-5 minutes) • to teach the students correct pronunciation of the ability phrases.

Teacher focuses on the phrases which might be problematic for the students.Tecaher models, drills and shows the Word stress of aptitiute.talented,useless,usefull,gifted.. Ss chorally or individually respond to the teacher's modellings and drillings.

Cntrolled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To give the students the opportunity to practise the vocabulary in a controlled task.

Teacher gives the "Find someone who..." handout to the Ss and asks them to write the names of the Ss in class if they match with the ability.Ss walk in the class and try to find people with certain abilities such as is expert in his or her field of interest is useless in sports. is very skillfull in dancing has an aptitiude for maths.. Then the teacher asks Ss to share their list with the class.
